Encoder Discs for Metrology & Surveying Instruments

In measuring instruments the disc’s graduation error, eccentricity and signal quality define the instrument’s accuracy.

Recommendations

  • Substrate: glass encoder disc, with a hub of similar expansion coefficient or a uniform flexible adhesive layer.
  • Signals: sine/cosine tracks for high interpolation — check DC offset, amplitude mismatch, phase and harmonics; see sin/cos signal quality.
  • Eccentricity: specify pattern-to-bore concentricity and ask for a centering reference ring; consider two opposed readheads to cancel first-harmonic error.
  • Inspection: agree acceptance criteria by zone in advance — see incoming inspection checklist.
