Selection, customization and quality
Is an encoder disc the same as a code wheel or codewheel?
Yes. Encoder disc, encoder disk, code disc, code wheel and codewheel are interchangeable names for the patterned disc that an optical rotary encoder reads.
Glass or reflective metal encoder disc — which should I choose?
Choose glass for high resolution and thermal stability; choose reflective metal for compact designs with vibration or shock. Glass has low expansion and sharp line edges but is sensitive to impact; metal is strong, and the reflective optical path puts source and detector on one side so the encoder can be thinner. Full comparison.
What is the difference between transmissive and reflective discs?
On a transmissive disc, light passes through the disc and the source and detector are on opposite sides. On a reflective disc, light reflects from high- and low-reflectance areas and the source and detector are on the same side. ENC7 makes both.
Can you make both incremental and absolute discs?
Yes. Glass and metal discs can carry incremental and absolute multi-track patterns made to your drawing.
How do I choose between incremental and absolute?
If the machine must know its position immediately after a power loss (robot joints, multi-axis servo), choose absolute. If you only measure speed or relative movement and cost matters, choose incremental. Incremental discs must be homed at power-up; absolute discs have a unique code for every position. Guide.
How does line count relate to encoder resolution?
Counts per revolution = line count × multiplication or interpolation factor. With ×4 square-wave decoding, 2500 lines give 10,000 counts per revolution; sin/cos signals can be interpolated much further. Resolution is not accuracy — graduation error and eccentricity also matter. Guide.
Does temperature affect angle accuracy?
Uniform heating leaves every line at its original angle, so the effect is small. Watch disc-to-hub expansion mismatch (uneven adhesive can cause eccentricity), the change of reading radius on PC discs, and readhead gap on reflective designs. Glass expands about 3–9×10⁻⁶/K, PC about 65–70×10⁻⁶/K.
Where does sin/cos interpolation error come from?
From DC offset, amplitude mismatch, phase deviation from 90° and harmonic distortion of the two signals. On the disc side, duty cycle, edge quality, contrast, eccentricity and readhead gap matter. A Lissajous figure on an oscilloscope in XY mode shows them. Guide.
Can you make discs to my drawing? What do you need?
Yes. Send disc type (glass/metal/PC, transmissive/reflective, incremental/absolute), outer diameter and bore, substrate, line count or resolution, key process and inspection requirements, quantity and target date — ideally with a CAD drawing. RFQ checklist.
How are sample and production lead times determined?
An engineer reviews your drawing for manufacturability and quotes; the quotation includes both sample and volume lead times.
What is your minimum order quantity?
[TBD: MOQ policy]. Sample lots are quoted case by case.
What is your production capacity?
About 30,000 discs per day across all product lines.
How do you ensure graduation quality?
Every disc is inspected by AOI machine vision for graduation integrity, pitch and surface defects; critical dimensions are re-checked on a vision measuring machine; transparent and opaque areas are tested for optical density.
What certifications do you have?
The operating company, Langfang Jingzheng Optoelectronics Technology Co., Ltd., is a National High-Tech Enterprise with ISO 9001 certification, was recognized as a National Technology-based SME in 2024, and holds patents including CN217210914U.
